You cared about the story, the characters. Game of Thrones has heroes and villains, devious plots and backstabbings, bastards who should have been king, dwarves who deserved their own armies. Without appreciating the stakes, a battle is just spectacle. What is Game of Thrones without Cersei’s machinations, the Spider’s complicated web, or Littlefinger’s wily schemes? Without understanding the characters, their deaths are meaningless. It’s an expertly crafted tour no doubt, but it doesn’t tell a story, and story is all that matters. It’s cheesy, it’s stupid, but there’s far more emotion in those opening minutes than in the 40 or so missions that comprise AoE IV’s campaign.ĪoE IV’s campaign opens with a narrator describing the Battle of Hastings, but with all the passionless charm and detachment of someone recording the nth audio tour to one of a hundred world heritage sites. A lone soldier, the only survivor, weary and bloody from battle, lets fall the final chess piece while raising tearful eyes towards a setting sun. The background score is tense, then sombre. Knights clash, swords clang, men die to the backdrop of burning ruins. The enemy lays siege to a castle, knights launch a counter-attack but their efforts are in vain. Where’s the wololo?ĪoE II, the game AoE IV is meant to succeed, opens with two kings playing an intense game of chess, where each move translates to moves on a real battlefield. The time-tested rock-paper-scissors unit balance, polished visuals and high production values befitting a Microsoft-sponsored title are all present, but the presentation is disappointingly impersonal and, despite the polish, generic verging on bland.
